57 You are my portion,(A) Lord;
    I have promised to obey your words.(B)
58 I have sought(C) your face with all my heart;
    be gracious to me(D) according to your promise.(E)
59 I have considered my ways(F)
    and have turned my steps to your statutes.
60 I will hasten and not delay
    to obey your commands.(G)
61 Though the wicked bind me with ropes,
    I will not forget(H) your law.
62 At midnight(I) I rise to give you thanks
    for your righteous laws.(J)
63 I am a friend to all who fear you,(K)
    to all who follow your precepts.(L)
64 The earth is filled with your love,(M) Lord;
    teach me your decrees.(N)

12 Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold
    is the rebuke of a wise judge to a listening ear.(B)

13 Like a snow-cooled drink at harvest time
    is a trustworthy messenger to the one who sends him;
    he refreshes the spirit of his master.(C)
14 Like clouds and wind without rain
    is one who boasts of gifts never given.

15 Through patience a ruler can be persuaded,(D)
    and a gentle tongue can break a bone.(E)

16 If you find honey, eat just enough—
    too much of it, and you will vomit.(F)
17 Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house—
    too much of you, and they will hate you.

18 Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow
    is one who gives false testimony against a neighbor.(G)
19 Like a broken tooth or a lame foot
    is reliance on the unfaithful in a time of trouble.
20 Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day,
    or like vinegar poured on a wound,
    is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.

21 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat;
    if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
22 In doing this, you will heap burning coals(H) on his head,
    and the Lord will reward you.(I)

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil.(O) Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.(P) 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.(Q) 19 Do not take revenge,(R) my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[b](S) says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
